TMF Lowlands 1999 on Friday
Interview taken by: Daphne
With me here are the guys of silverchair. Hello, welcome in Holland.
Ben: Thank you.
Are you enjoying it so far?
Ben: Yeah, we’ve been enjoying it very much.
What time did you get here?
Ben: This morning at about 9 o’clock.
OK. That’s an early start. Are you doing a lot of festivals this summer?
Daniel: Yep, we’ve done a couple of festivals around Europe and we did some festivals in America. All which have been good.
I’ve read that the festivals in America become bigger and bigger and more aggressive too. Did you notice anything of that?
Daniel: Not really. They are definitely big. I don’t know if they’re getting bigger cause it’s the first time we’ve done them.
Do you notice any differences in audiences when you’re on stage?
Chris: I guess you do notice some differences in culture but there isn’t much difference. They jump around everywhere.
They jump the same everywhere.
Chris: Yeah.
Neon Ballroom was the first album on which you could totally concentrate on making the album instead of going to school. How did that feel?
Ben: It’s good when you can concentrate on making the album instead of doing schoolwork. We could concentrate more on the music and spend more time on making the album.
You’re still very young like 19 years old and you started early. Aren’t you afraid that you’ll be burned out when you’re like 25?
Chris: I guess we don’t play everywhere we can. And compared to other bands we don’t tour as much as they do. So we have enough energy to just…rock on.
What do you think of touring?
Daniel: It’s good when you got good shows to play and there’s organisation that’s cool. There are times when it’s not good and it’s not done properly. But this has been good.
Isn’t it boring to be on the road all the time?
Daniel: It’s usually boring to be away. But it’s good when you get to play and the shows are good. But the majority of time you just wait to play.
Ben: It’s actually being kinda boring today. We’ve had nothing to do since 10 o’clock this morning when we woke up.
Just hanging around
Ben: Yeah, just hanging around. Trying to find stuff to do.
OK. You guys are reaching the stage of getting really famous. Is this the point when you start breaking hotelrooms and throwing televisions out of the window and stuff like that?
Ben: In about a half year from now when we’re multi-multi-millionairs and we can afford lots of televisions and hotelrooms, we’ll start breaking stuff.
Daniel: We already started. Toothpicks, toothpicks and stuff.
What was the last thing you threw out of the window?
Daniel: We threw our keyboard player out of the window yesterday.
You’re kidding me.
Daniel: So he won’t be playing tonight. He hurt himself.
